For some people, these teeth never cause any problems. In other cases, though, these teeth are impacted, meaning they get stuck fully or partially beneath the gumline. Impaction might not seem like a big deal at first, but it is! In fact, it increases the risk of several serious oral health issues. This blog post explains what you need to know.

Decay and Infection

A partially impacted wisdom tooth emerges only partway from the gumline. It can be quite difficult to keep clean, even if you have excellent brushing and flossing habits. Food particles and bacteria may accumulate around the tooth, leading to the formation of plaque, tartar, and cavities. A tooth infection is also a real possibility, which is not only painful but can also cyst systemic illness.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is another complication that can arise when partially impacted wisdom teeth are not kept very clean. This infection starts out as mild swelling and inflammation in the soft pink tissue that surrounds the teeth. Left untreated, though, it can result in persistent bad breath, gum recession, jawbone damage, and an increased risk of systemic health problems, including heart attack and dementia.

Damage to Adjacent Teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth often develop at an odd angle. As they try to emerge from the gumline, they can push against the adjacent molars. As you might imagine, this is very uncomfortable and can damage those nearby teeth! Plus, the pressure might contribute to dental misalignment. (Wisdom teeth are rarely the sole cause of misalignment, but they can add to existing issues.)

Cysts

A cyst is a closed pocket of tissue that might contain air, fluid, or pus. They can form around impacted wisdom teeth. Sometimes, these cysts are harmless. But in other cases, they can cause serious issues, such as severe pain, jawbone damage, and more.

Pain and Reduced Quality of Life

Wisdom tooth pain can interfere with your daily life. You might be distracted by the discomfort, or you might no longer be able to eat your favorite foods. Plus, issues like bad breath from an infection could cause you to feel self-conscious.

Get Your Wisdom Teeth Evaluated

Impacted wisdom teeth are nothing to take lightly! Be sure to visit your dentist regularly so they can check on your third molars and identify potential dangers. If they recommend removal, it would be wise to comply with their treatment plan. Timely extraction of impacted wisdom teeth can prevent problems, relieve pain, and support your smile’s long-term wellness.

Meet the Practice

Piney Point Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of Houston is home to four highly skilled oral surgeons, two of whom are board-certified.
