You use it to speak, chew, and laugh every day. It might only attract your attention when it is not working properly! Yes, jaw stiffness or a sensation of a locked jaw are troubling symptoms. What causes limited jaw mobility, and what can you do about it? This blog post offers helpful information.

TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorder (TMD) can refer to a range of problems that affect how the jaw joints (called the TMJs) function. It can be caused by dental misalignment, natural anatomical issues, injuries, arthritis, and more. In addition to causing pain and muscle soreness, it is also often accompanied by jaw stiffness. In some cases, it can even prevent jaw movements altogether or make them extremely difficult.

TMD is highly treatable. Depending on its cause, your care provider might recommend home remedies, a custom oral appliance, or minor bite adjustments. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.

Injuries

Facial trauma may damage the jaw joints and lead to limited jaw mobility. If you recently (or in the past) experienced an injury that affected your face, talk to your doctor or oral surgeon. They can take X-rays and identify which tissues are damaged before they recommend your next steps.

Stress and Teeth Grinding

High levels of stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension throughout your body, including the muscles that control jaw movements. Stress is also a common trigger for nighttime teeth grinding and clenching, which can further strain the muscles and lead to feelings of stiffness and limited jaw mobility.

Some people find that breathing exercises, hobbies, or even a short vacation can significantly lower stress. If you deal with chronic stress and anxiety, it may be worth your time to speak to a mental health professional. In the meantime, a custom mouthguard for nighttime use can protect you from teeth grinding.

Excessive Chewing

Overuse of any muscle or joint can lead to stiffness and limited range of motion — and your jaw is no exception! Suddenly starting to consume a lot of tough foods can cause discomfort. Similarly, if you frequently chew gum, it may be more than what your body can handle at the moment.

Try eating soft foods for a while, and use heat and cold therapy to reduce stiffness and soreness.

Tetanus

Tetanus, which is colloquially known as lockjaw, is a serious bacterial infection and a true medical emergency. If you have been vaccinated, you probably do not need to worry about it. However, if you experience symptoms of tetanus beyond jaw stiffness, such as trouble swallowing and abdominal stiffness, go to the ER right away.

Jaw stiffness and limited mobility can have a number of causes. If you are unsure why you are experiencing symptoms, talk to a qualified medical professional so you can get on the path to relief.

Meet the Practice

At Piney Point Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, our team is proud to provide a range of advanced services, including treatment of TMJ disorder.
