Would you like to achieve a more youthful appearance with the help of injectable cosmetic treatments? Both BOTOX and dermal fillers are popular options. However, it is important to keep in mind that while these treatments are often lumped into the same category, they are actually quite different! This blog post explains how each one works and may help you decide which one is best for your goals.

Understanding BOTOX®

BOTOX is an injectable form of botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that affects muscle movements. When it is strategically injected beneath the skin, it limits the movement of the targeted muscles. As a result, the skin on top looks much smoother and more youthful.

In the world of aesthetics, BOTOX is primarily used to treat dynamic wrinkles, which are those caused by repeated facial movements. For example, it is great for crow’s feet, forehead lines, lines between the eyebrows, and lines around the mouth. It does not help with wrinkles caused by gravity or other signs of aging.

BOTOX lasts for several months at a time, and you can continue to retreat with it as long as you wish.

Understanding Dermal Fillers

A dermal filler is a substance that gets injected into the skin with the goal of restoring lost volume. As you age, skin sagging and a hollow appearance can start to develop in areas like the cheeks, temples, and lips. A filler plumps up these areas to create a smoother complexion that looks years younger. It can also help to reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds and other signs of aging caused by gravity.

There are several types of fillers on the market. One popular product is called Juvéderm. It contains hyaluronic acid and collagen, both of which play a role in maintaining smooth, plump skin. The body naturally breaks Juvéderm down over time, but periodic retreatment can help to maintain your results.

Which Is Best for You?

Whether you should get Juvéderm or BOTOX depends on how your skin is aging and what you hope to accomplish. A lot of people start BOTOX in their late 20s as a preventive measure or to address early signs of aging, whereas fillers may not be needed until a bit later (a lot of people start in their 40s). However, treatments like lip filler or jaw contouring with Juvéderm may be performed earlier.

Of course, you may choose to get both BOTOX and dermal fillers! These treatments complement each other and can help to provide the most comprehensive anti-aging results. Talk to your provider for guidance on designing a treatment plan that helps you look and feel your best.
