What is Juvéderm® and How Does It Work?

Juvéderm is a smooth, FDA-approved dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid and collagen, substances that are found naturally in the body. Juvéderm is injected into the skin, adding volume to the face to reduce wrinkles and replenish collagen. As you age and your skin is exposed to the sun and other environmental pollutants, collagen, elastin fibers, and hyaluronic acid will break down, causing your face to appear hollow and sunken. Juvéderm injections temporarily replenish these firming parts of the skin to improve its appearance for about six months before needing touch-ups.

Before Juvéderm® Treatment

Before your treatment, the wrinkles and folds around your nose and mouth will be examined to determine their depth and which appropriate Juvéderm formulation to use; Juvéderm Ultra is used for contouring and adding volume to smooth wrinkles and folds, while Juvéderm Ultra Plus is for deeper wrinkles and folds.

Because Juvéderm is made of a substance found naturally in the body, there is no need for an allergy test. Local anesthesia is not required for the Juvéderm treatment but may be used to numb the treatment site. During this initial meeting, you will also be given special instructions regarding medications you may currently be taking. After Juvéderm® Treatment

There is minimal recovery or downtime. Side effects are mild to moderate and may include redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps. Side effects will clear up on their own in seven days or less. You can apply ice to the treatment site if swelling occurs, but any swelling is usually minimal.
