Dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm, offer a fast and minimally invasive way to smooth out the skin, add volume to areas that have lost their youthful glow, and boost your confidence! While the process is pretty easy for most people, you can make it even easier by preparing properly. Here are some tips to help you go into your appointment with confidence:

Share a Thorough Medical History with Your Provider

Before your Juvéderm appointment, be ready to talk openly with your provider about your health history. Mention any medical conditions, allergies, previous cosmetic treatments, and history of cold sores, especially if you are treating areas around the mouth. You should also share whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding, prone to scarring, or currently managing an infection or skin irritation. This information helps your provider decide whether treatment is appropriate for you and whether any extra precautions are needed before your visit.

Stop/Start Taking Medications and Supplements as Directed

Some medications and supplements can increase your chance of bruising or swelling after dermal filler injections. Your provider may ask you to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, garlic supplements, ginkgo biloba, or similar products before treatment. However, you should never stop a prescription medication or medically necessary supplement unless the prescribing clinician says it is safe. If you are unsure about anything you take, bring a list to your consultation so your provider can give you personalized instructions.

In some cases, it can be wise to start taking an arnica supplement before dermal fillers. It may reduce the risk of bruising at the injection sites.

Prepare Your Skin

Healthy, calm skin is ideal for injectable treatment. In the days leading up to your appointment, keep your skin clean, moisturized, and protected from the sun. Avoid waxing, bleaching, harsh exfoliants, chemical peels, retinoids, depilatories, or other irritating products near the treatment area unless your provider gives you different instructions. On the day of your appointment, arrive with a clean face if possible, and avoid applying heavy makeup over the areas being treated. If you have a rash, blemish, sunburn, or active irritation, call the office before your appointment.

Reduce Salt Intake

Because swelling is a normal part of the healing process after Juvéderm, small choices before treatment can make a difference. Try to reduce salty foods for a day or two before your appointment, since sodium can contribute to fluid retention and puffiness. Focus on staying hydrated, eating balanced meals, and avoiding alcohol if your provider recommends it. These simple steps can help your body feel its best and may support a smoother recovery after your injections.

Preparing well can help you feel more relaxed and confident when it is time for your Juvéderm treatment. If you have questions about your appointment or your pre-treatment instructions, reach out to your provider.
