The term “facial trauma” can apply to practically any injury that affects the face or jaw, from cuts and scrapes to severe, life-changing damage. That fact, combined with a range of other factors, means that every person has a unique journey when it comes to recovering from facial trauma. Still, you may wonder how long it will be before you heal and what you can expect in the meantime. This blog post aims to provide some helpful information.

The Importance of Prompt Medical Evaluation

If you have experienced facial trauma, seeing an oral and maxillofacial surgeon as soon as possible is one of the best steps you can take for your recovery. These specialists have the training to assess not only the visible injuries but also any underlying damage that might not be obvious right away. Early treatment allows your surgeon to address issues before they worsen, thereby reducing your risk for long-term complications like infections, improper healing, or nerve damage.

Depending on the severity of the situation, you may choose to visit the ER immediately after your injury, so the team there can stabilize you and advise you on your next steps. If you do not already have an oral and maxillofacial surgeon whom you trust, you may ask the ER team for a referral.

Home Care to Support Your Recovery

After you see your provider, following their instructions at home is just as important for your healing. They may advise you to:

  • Keep your wound or injury clean by gently washing with mild soap and water, and avoid touching or picking at scabs or stitches.
  • Manage your pain — take any prescribed or over-the-counter medications as directed, and use cold packs to help with swelling during the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Eat a nutritious diet to give your body the building blocks it needs to heal, Aim for balanced meals with plenty of protein, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Try to rest as much as possible and avoid strenuous activity that could delay healing.
  • Watch for signs of infection like redness, increased pain, or discharge, and contact your provider right away if they appear.

Rough Healing Timelines for Common Types of Facial Trauma

Different types of injuries heal at different rates. Here is a rough overview of healing timelines for common types of facial trauma:

  • Cuts and scrapes: Minor injuries often heal within 5 – 10 days, though deeper cuts with stitches may take 1 – 2 weeks.
  • Bruising and swelling: Most bruising fades in 1 – 3 weeks, with swelling improving steadily over the first several days.
  • Facial bone fractures: Simple fractures may heal in 4 – 6 weeks, while more complex injuries can require 8 weeks or longer. Surgery may be necessary to repair some fractures.

Your journey to recovery may have its ups and downs, but each step forward counts. Remember, healing takes time, and support is always available — do not hesitate to reach out to your care team with any concerns.
