Reasons to Extract Wisdom Teeth
There are a number of reasons that a patient may require wisdom teeth extraction, including everything from impaction and crowding of adjacent teeth to supplementing orthodontic treatment. At Piney Point Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Weil and Dr. Koo can discuss with you the details of your unique dentition, explaining why or why not wisdom tooth extraction is recommended in your individual case.
Why is a Wisdom Tooth Extraction Needed?
Though wisdom tooth impaction does not always necessitate extraction, it is a condition that should be thoroughly evaluated to determine overall effect on the rest of the mouth before it becomes a severe problem. Between 25 and 30 percent of impacted wisdom teeth in the mandible (the lower jaw) require removal due to an infection called periocoronitis. This condition occurs when a wisdom tooth erupts only partially, leaving the surrounding gingival tissue vulnerable to bacterial infection. This can cause the patient a substantial amount of pain and may lead to an even more serious infection.
Another common reason for wisdom tooth removal is impaction against the teeth directly adjacent to the wisdom tooth itself, the second molars. The risk of dental caries (cavities) and periodontal disease are especially high in cases of impaction such as this, particularly because it is extremely difficult to completely clean the area surrounding a partially erupted tooth.
A dental consultation with our oral surgeons in Houston, TX will determine the best course of action regarding wisdom tooth extraction in your case. A visual assessment and comprehensive radiography (x-ray imaging) will aid in any decision regarding removal and/or treatment. As always, your oral health, comfort, and safety are always our number one priorities.
