Apicoectomy: When Root Canal Treatment Fails
July 25, 2016
Root canal treatment may fail for reasons that are beyond the control of your dentist or endodontist. While the procedure does have a high success rate, there may be canals or branches within the tooth that are impossible to detect. The infection spreads to these areas, causing you to feel continued pain in the tooth. You have options when a root canal fails: tooth extraction, retreatment of the tooth, or apicoectomy. Dr. Weil and Dr. Koo perform apicoectomy at Piney Point Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Continue reading to learn more about the oral surgery in Houston.

Are Dental Implants an Option for Congenitally Missing Teeth?
January 27, 2016
Hypodontia refers to a person who does not develop one to six teeth. Third molars, wisdom teeth, are the most common congenitally missing teeth, but even excluding these teeth, nearly 10% of people are effected by hypdontia. Other commonly missing teeth are maxillary (upper jaw) laterals, the teeth on either side of the front teeth, and mandibular (lower jaw) premolars, the teeth on either side of the canines. What Injuries are Treated by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?
January 1, 2016
While oral and maxillofacial surgeons offer a wide variety of services including preparation for dentures or braces, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder management, and other preparatory or preventive treatments, caring for patients following dental trauma is one of our primary purposes. During the additional training completed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, the majority of dentists spend time completing residency in a hospital setting. This hospital training gives dentists the opportunity to familiarize themselves with traumatic facial injuries and their treatments. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are often referred to as the link between dentistry and medicine, and this idea is never more clear than it is when treating traumatic oral or maxillofacial injuries in conjunction with general dentists and physicians. The goal of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and most general dental practitioners and medical doctors, is to provide patients the highest quality treatment to restore natural look, feel, and function.
